World Nutella Day! - Nutella Pop Tarts

Today is World Nutella Day. It is a day I take very seriously. No, seriously!! Okay maybe not, but it's nice to have an excuse for a guilt-free day of eating Nutella. A little history on the day: In 2007 two food bloggers decided to give Nutella its own day. Their thoughts on the day: “A day to celebrate, to get creative with, and most importantly, to EAT Nutella.” Amen to that!

Nutella Pop Tarts

This is the first time I've made pop tarts myself. I'm always fascinated by the endless list of flavors Kellogg's® comes up with for their pop tarts, but I don't think they have a Nutella-flavored pop tart. If you're not in the mood for Nutella (which I doubt, but maybe want to cut back on calories?) you can substitute it for any type of jam. And you can cut the pop tarts into any type of shape you please. I made half a batch of rectangular pop tarts and the other half into small circles, using a biscuit cutter. Rating: 4 out of 5.

Nutella Pop Tarts: adapted from BigOven.com

Ingredients:
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 ¾ cups vegetable shortening
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vinegar
- ½ cup cold water
- 16 tablespoons Nutella
- 1 large egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions:
- In a large bowl, cut flour and shortening together with pastry blender or two butter knives, until completely blended (mixture will resemble crumbs). Add sugar, baking powder, salt, egg, vinegar and cold water. Mix with hands until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
- Divide dough into fourths, refrigerating the portions you are not working with yet. Take first ¼ of dough and roll out onto a floured surface. Cut into rectangles using a sharp knife. It is helpful to make a template the size you wish your pop tarts to be, from cardboard or heavy plastic, so they will be a uniform size.
- Spread on tablespoon Nutella on one half of the rectangles, leaving a half inch or so on the edges without jam. Cover with the other half of the rectangles. Crimp edges with a fork. Brush the pop tarts with the egg wash using a pastry brush.
- Bake at 350 degrees for 15 - 20 minutes or until the pie dough is evenly browned and cooked through. Cool completely and place into zip baggies for storage until you are ready to eat them. Repeat with remaining dough and Nutella until it is all completed.
- Variation: Glaze pop tarts with a simple glaze made from powdered sugar, milk and vanilla extract. Be sure to let glaze dry hard before placing pop tarts into storage baggies.

Honestly I'm kinda disgusted by pop tarts, mostly due to their dry texture. I love toaster strudels though. But NEITHER has anything on your amazing Nutella pastries! Love em and happy world nutella day!
